April 2019

Ben McLean as Shrek

Welcome!

Welcome to the April newsletter - and we've got lots to share with you this month!

Our first production of the year, the wonderful Shrek the Musical opens on May 4th, and the cast and orchestra have been working hard,  with two sitzprobe nights, and bump in not far off. The orchestra will be located backstage again, which enables us to create a much more intimate sound in the theatre. It does present some accommodation challenges for the cast though, so we'll be hoping for good weather in May as most of the cast will be outside in the sheds and a fully fitted out container!

Firstly we have to thank Narina Carter for Shrek's photoshoot makeup and prosthetics. Ben McLean, seen above as Shrek is almost unrecognisable! Take a look at some of the
pre-production photos, and thanks to Libby McConnell for the photoshoot.

Now is the time to buy tickets and share the Facebook event among your friends! Don't forget the role of Young Fiona is shared between Amelie Ruge and Lillian Cruwys. If you want to see a particular child you can check the cast schedule before you book. We have a great show in store for you!

In other news, CHMCC Junior recently held their AGM, and the current junior committee are busy planning some activities for our younger members. Scroll down to read more from CHMCC Junior.

Finally we're pleased to announce that auditions for our next production, South Pacific will be held on June 15th! Full information on the auditions is available on the
Auditions page , and you can read more below from the director, Judi Williams. Specific audition pieces will be required - make sure you read all the information provided, and check the FAQ's.

Join us at the theatre and prepare for a Shrektastic time!

Hi everyone,
Well, show season is nearly upon us and the company is very excited about Shrek the Musical making its way onto the stage.  The cast has been working tirelessly on singing, blocking and dancing over the past three months to bring this classic movie to life in the stage version.  There are many highlights in this show and it has everything - laughter, tears, romance and all of your favourite characters - Fiona, Shrek, Donkey, Farquaad, Dragon and a long list of fairytale characters.

Thank you to director Donna Fairall for all her hard work and patience in bringing this spectacular show to life. Donna has certainly worked tirelessly to bring her vision of this show to the stage.  We are only one week away from bump in to the theatre and the show opens on May 4th.

This show is one for the whole family and children will certainly love this production.  Get your tickets early to avoid disappointment!

Auditions for our November show South Pacific will be held on the weekend of June 15 & 16. Please consider auditioning for this classic show, as we will require a large cast for this one. Make sure you check the Auditions page for details as there will be set audition songs to prepare.

All the best & see you at the Jetty Theatre in May for Shrek.

There is nothing quite as fun as watching some of your favourite childhood characters come to life on stage!

I first experienced this when I saw Beauty and the Beast on stage almost 20 years ago. A huge Disney fan, I was amazed and delighted to see actors on stage playing such iconic characters. Directing Beauty and the Beast for CHMCC in 2012, was such a magical experience and I never thought that anything would measure up, but I have since enjoyed that pleasure again, directing Annie and Mary Poppins.

Shrek the Musical has been enjoyable from start to finish. With so many hilarious one liners and comic moments, every rehearsal had been filled with smiles, laughs (snorts!) and encouragement from a dedicated cast.

We are now only a few weeks away from opening night and the cast are getting quite excited! Sitzprobe has taken place, bump in is right around the corner and we have just started sharing some amazing promo photos. A big thanks to Libby McConnell and Di O’Ferrall for creating some amazing promotional shots and if you’ve seen our Shrek you will appreciate the incredible job Narina Carter has done with his makeup.

Tickets are already selling and I hope you get in fast to get yours. It’s going to be a pretty fantastic show.

That’ll do Donkey….that’ll do….

Set in a mythical “once upon a time” sort of land, Shrek the Musical is the story of a hulking green ogre, Shrek (Ben McLean) who, after being mocked and feared his entire life by anything that crosses his path, retreats to a swamp to exist in happy isolation. Suddenly, a gang of homeless fairy-tale characters led by Pinocchio the puppet (Amy Hancock) raid his sanctuary, evicted by the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad (Peter Creenaune). So Shrek strikes a deal: he'll get them their homes back, if they give him his swamp back!

But when Shrek and Farquaad meet, Farquaad strikes a deal of his own: Shrek may have his swamp back, if he undertakes a quest to rescue the Princess Fiona (Courtney Campbell) from a dragon-guarded tower.

Shrek duly rescues her, and finds something appealing, something strange and different, about this princess. He likes her. A lot. But why does she always run off when the sun sets?

From the Junior President

This past year CHMCC Jr has experienced many new situations and have had an exciting 12 months.
During this time, we have had the opportunity to discover much about organising and planning, so we have learnt so much. Every member of the committee last year added their help, support and ideas to create new fun adventures for everyone associated with CHMCC Jr.
I feel we had an awesome year and have grown as a collective group of young adults. The event that excited us most last year was the opening of “Alice” which was highly successful. We were proud to be the first group of under 18s to direct an entire show and see it through from beginning to end.
Most importantly the cast, crew and production team had so much fun and the feedback from parents, committee and production crew has been very positive. Through the show we learnt the steps that needs to be taken to organise a big event and how we can become more organised, everything we have learnt will help the next show/workshop run more smoothly. Thank you to the senior committee of CHMCC for your ongoing support, mentorship and production advice.

We are now in the process of planning a workshop for 2019 that will intrigue kids of all backgrounds to discover everything theatrical. Hopefully we can give them a positive introduction into the world of theatre. Details will be further finalised during the next CHMCC Jr meeting.
The Junior committee branch is extremely thankful for the opportunity to engage and unite kids of Coffs Harbour in a positive way through the theatre and have had a wonderful learning experience. We have learnt how to be positive and how to resolve any issues that may arise. We welcome feedback regarding our plans and do our best to implement any suggested improvements. We feel that the guidance of the senior committee is helpful and appreciate everything they do for the juniors. We are so thankful for a successful 12 months and I hope everyone involved has had an amazing time.

Auditions for our November production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific will be held on Saturday June 15th. Full information is available on the Auditions page.

South Pacific

Picture
I am so excited to be directing this superb Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. It is set on an island in the Pacific in the later part of the Second World War, and has all the elements you would hope to find in a musical; Love, Patriotism, Loss, Comedy, Espionage  and a
problem which still haunts us in todays society: racial discrimination.

The music goes from classic romance to extreme comedy and also pathos. It requires a large cast of energetic and dedicated performers willing to embrace comedy, discipline, Hollywood style dance numbers and fabulous singing. Some of the well know numbers are “Some Enchanted Evening”, “This nearly was Mine”, “Cockeyed optimist,” “Bali Hai” and full on ensemble numbers like “Nothing like a dame “ and “ Wash that man right out of my hair”.

Unlike my usual undertakings this show has a limited cast of children ( 2 girls and 2 boys) and they must be able to pass as part Polynesian so it may mean a change of hair colour  for some.
I have an excellent production team on board featuring Pam Lane as Assistant Director and Stage Manager, Tim Egan as MD, Maureen Burgess as chorus mistress and Jade Naidu for choreography. Shalla Thomas will be cast coordinator and also front of house. The audition panel will be comprised of all of the above and of course myself.

If you are as excited as I am then I suggest you visit the Auditions page where our very talented secretary Di O’Ferrall has all the details. For any further information please contact me on 0427134429.

Looking forward to seeing you all at auditions
