August 2018
Welcome to the August blog and newsletter! It's been a busy couple of months for us at CHMCC with both Alice in Wonderland Jr and Les Misérables in rehearsal, and our annual social event, the Gala Arts Murder Mystery Night, and the AGM in the same weekend. Scroll down to see photos from the Murder Mystery Night and the results of the AGM.
The juniors bump in in just three weeks with Alice Jr, with all the direction, choreography, music teaching, makeup and much more done by the young people themselves. Take a look at the web gallery to see some of the wonderful costumes, some hired/borrowed but many made specially by parents and grandparents. It's going to be a wonderful show, and has a limited run of only 10 performances, so get your tickets now before they're all gone! A huge thank you to Libby McConnell for the photos.
Les Mis rehearsals continue, and the cast is enjoying getting to grips with the music. Unfortunately one of the directors, John Greene has had to withdraw due to ill health, but Paul McLeod has taken over the helm, and rehearsals are going well, with a talented and enthusiastic cast. We wish John all the best and are pleased to say that he is fully recovered and can be seen on stage on September 8th & 9th with the BCU Night at the Opera (see Diary Dates for details.)
Despite disappointing ticket sales for the Murder Mystery, those that did support the night had a wonderful evening. We decided at short notice to relocate the event to a smaller venue, so it was rather fortunate that our President, Tim Egan has recently become a restaurant owner! Tim and his staff at the not-even-open-yet Treme Piano and Wine Bar pulled all the stops out to cater for a large group of enthusiastic theatre people in wigs, ruffles, hoop skirts, fairy (and bat) wings, fake hair chests and many other assorted costumes! The food was great, and a good time was had by all! Scroll down or take a look at the Murder Mystery Web Gallery to see!
A wet and cold Sunday dawned for our AGM, but several hardy folk turned up and appreciated a hot sizzled sausage. It was especially good to see some of the young people there, so thanks to them and to everyone who attended. Scroll down to see your committee for 2018/19.
Finally we are excited to announce our season for 2019! First up in May will be the fantastic Shrek the Musical, directed by Donna Fairall, followed in November by the classic South Pacific, to be directed by Judi Williams. There will be something for everyone in next year's season, and we look forward to seeing you all at the theatre.

President's Report presented at the AGM
The 2017/2018 year for CHMCC has been, yet again, highly successful for all those involved in bringing quality community theatre to the people of the Coffs Coast.
CHMCC Juniors have been an inspiration for many younger performers and even adults. The committee have worked tirelessly to provide a wonderful opportunity for young people of the area. The juniors held a highly successful summer workshop with 35 keen students. They had an opportunity to experience tutorials in singing, acting and dance. Thank you to all the wonderful tutors who gave their time in the pursuit of learning for our younger performers. This will definitely be happening again this summer!
The Juniors have absolutely amazed me in their organization and planning for their upcoming production of Alice in Wonderland Junior. The creative team - directors Ellie Waters and Rachael McConnell, Music Director Amy Hancock, choreographers Emily Hodges and Kate Clerkin have been incredibly dedicated to achieve this mighty effort. The level of maturity and planning is truly inspiring and it will be a fabulous production.
Our two major productions of 2017/18 proved to be highly successful. We were fortunate to have extremely talented casts for both The Sound of Music and Seussical. We had well over one hundred children audition for roles in The Sound of Music and the chorus singing, particularly from our nuns was spectacular. Thank you to Judi Williams as director and Pam Lane as assistant director, who brought this classic to life. A feature of the show was the first time use of projections as sets. We were also fortunate enough to have a 96% seating occupancy across the season.
Seussical was a visual spectacular with lots of colour and energy brought to the production. Thank you to first time director Ainsley Corbett and his assistant director Maureen Burgess. It was a challenging musical due to the fact it was almost entirely sung through. Maureen Burgess certainly did an amazing job teaching the vocals for this show.
Finally thank you to the entire committee for such a fantastic year. A wonderful team, Judi, Di, Peter, Shalla, Cate, Pam, Ainsley, Lauren and John.
Here’s to another successful twelve months ahead.

From the Director
We are now eleven weeks into this exhilarating, exciting and, at times, exhausting process called Les Miserables.
The cast, ably led by our Musical Director Tim Egan and repetiteur Brandon Swain, have conquered the complexities of the score at each turn. There are rehearsals where I sit, close my eyes and am transported by their talents to my own little "castle on a cloud".
Each of them, whether they be the faithful faces we know so well or welcome new additions to our growing arts community, have bonded to form a harmonious, hard-working and happy cohort (despite their occasionally grumpy director). And our vocal masterclass with renowned Opera Australia principal, Tania Ferris, has created excitement by supporting their confidence and nuancing their artistic expression.
The enthusiastic response of the community in Coffs and beyond has also been overwhelming. To date, we have had about 650 tickets allocated and one performance has already been effectively sold out.
The popularity of Les Miserables over more than three decades and across the world is having no less effect in Coffs Harbour. Make sure you organise your group bookings early to ensure you don't miss this moving masterpiece.
