June 2018
Our first show of the year, Seussical, was bold, bright and colourful, and was a modest box office success, bringing in many families with young children, who all greatly enjoyed the show. This was a great result for a largely unknown production. For many, it was their first experience of live theatre, so we hope we've contributed to inspiring a new generation of theatre lovers! Our thanks to all who came to came and supported the show, and as always, huge thanks to all who worked so hard behind the scenes - building sets, sewing costumes, teaching new music etc etc. As always, we couldn't do it without you. If you missed the show, check out the web gallery. Photos by Simon Whittaker, with additional photos by Cate Walsh.
We moved swiftly on with auditions for our production of Les Misérables, with auditions being held over the June long weekend. There was a huge turn out, with an incredible amount of talent on display, and it was very encouraging to see so many new faces, and for once, plenty of men! You can see the full cast list below.
This marks the first time we will have had two productions in rehearsal at the same time, with rehearsals having started for Les Mis, and continuing with Alice in Wonderland Junior. The Juniors are on stage in September, with much of the organisation and teaching done by the young people themselves, with supervision. We thank all you parents for your support of the Juniors during the busy rehearsal period, and can't wait to see the results!
You can get a sneak peek at Alice at the annual theatre Fundraiser and Open Day on Sunday July 8th. Join us for a sausage sizzle and an open rehearsal of Alice. You can also browse the stalls and check out the theatre program for the year. Prior to the Open Day, a working bee is planned at the theatre on Saturday June 30th, all and any help would be appreciated.
That weekend promises to be a big one, with a Fundraiser event being held for a popular friend and long-time member, James Hall on Friday July 6th at the theatre. James has recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer, and the Fundraiser is to assist his family with medical costs. Many CHMCC and CHATS members will be performing, so keep an eye on Facebook for details of tickets or how to donate. If you'd like to get involved with the event, please contact Angela Robinsen for details on 0423 350690 or email [email protected]. Calling all Rentheads! If you'd like to be involved in singing 'Seasons of Love' for the finale, please contact Maureen Burgess.
We're dying to announce that our annual Gala Arts event this year is a Murder Mystery Night, to be held at the Park Beach Surf Club on August 25th! Tickets for this fun social event can be purchased at www.trybooking.com/WNUB, $70 per head for individual tickets or tables of 10; this includes the evening's entertainment, a three-course meal and a drink on arrival. It's a fairytale theme and costumes are highly encouraged, with the usual best-dressed prizes to be had. It promises to be a fun night, and we will also have an exciting announcement which the lucky ticket holders will be the first to hear! Scroll down for more details of this fun event.
Please be advised that the Annual General Meeting of CHMCC will take place on Sunday 26th August, 12:00 noon in the "O" Block theatre at Coffs Harbour Education Campus. All positions on the committee are open for election, and we would like to see as many members as possible. Join us before the meeting for a sausage sizzle!
And that concludes the wrap of recent news, we look forward to seeing you at these various events over the winter.

Seussical
How sad, yes! Oh how dreary! The end of a spectacular journey filled with amazing people doing amazing things. For 3 months we built a family as well as a show, the connectedness shone through on the stage with everyone working together seamlessly from cast to band to crew. The over the top Seuss characters set off beautifully by colourful costumes and expert sets and lighting, it was a show sure to put a smile on everyone’s face, which it did.
There has been an influx of overwhelming positivity coming from the community making the whole experience worthwhile. There are too many people to thank individually so a collective thank you to everyone that poured some love into the show and helped to make it what it was and bring my vision to life. One very happy first time director contemplating what is to come next.

From the President
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Seussical. Our May production was full of colour and the sights and sounds brought to us by the team of Ainsley Corbett and Maureen Burgess certainly left many an audience member entertained. Thank you to those who came to support this show!

From the Directors, Les Misérables
One year ago, I received a message from John Greene. John and I shared adjoining chairs in the dressing room at Wicked. At the time, the Company was seeking a director for this show and we had no scenes together, so we had plenty of opportunity off-stage to discuss our love of Les Miserables. His message contained a proposal that, to me, seemed an audacious dream.
I want to acknowledge my thanks to John for bringing me on board as his co-director. I am also thankful for the support, encouragement and advice I have received from people within our broader theatre community. I had no appreciation of the work that goes on for a director prior to now, and John and I would both confess that we’d be lost without you.
CHMCC has so many talented people – so many of whom have already invested considerable time in design, promotion, sets, costumes, administration and all the many pieces of work that are vital in a project of this size.
I am grateful to all the exceptional and talented people who came to auditions. For those of you that are part of our team, each of you is playing a vital role in turning the impossible into a reality. Many have said that Coffs Harbour cannot attract the talent needed to bring Les Miserables to this town; your auditions prove the doubters wrong and I look forward to continuing to smash expectations (and box office receipts) with you.
Whichever way you look at it, there is a magic to this show. Each person I speak to has a story about how they came to love Les Mis. It is, on its surface, a simple story of redemption, but, as one of our cast, Dee Tune, recently stated to me so poignantly, the theme of this flawless musical drama is more than that. It can be summarised quite simply in one line from the finale: “to love another person is to see the face of God”.
John and I look forward to an amazing production with you.
