Welcome!
Well we are halfway through 2021 and things in theatre are looking up. After 18 months CHMCCs production of Into the Woods finally made it to the stage with an amazing run by cast and crew which saw rave reviews from those who saw it.
In April we lost our very talented and hard-working secretary Jake Fisher to his move to Uluru for his work. We thank Jake for everything he has done for this company and wish him well in his new job. Until the AGM the committee asked me (Samantha Fauchon) to take on the role of Assistant Secretary, with Jake assisting from distance.
In Mid-April auditions were held for The Wizard of Oz Jr, to be directed by the very talented Billie-Jo Dukes. The show will be on stage in September, and we want to thank everyone who auditioned and congratulate the new cast. Rehearsals are under way and we can’t wait to see the cast take to the stage.
This last weekend also saw the auditions for CHMCCs production of Mamma Mia, directed by the lovely Dee Tune. It was an impressive turnout with so much talent on display. Thank you to all who attended and congratulations on the new cast. You can catch Mamma Mia at the jetty theatre later this year in November.
With theatre back in full swing, albeit a few adjustments with the new normal thanks to covid, this year is looking to be an amazing year for CHMCC. We thank everyone for the continued support with the never-ending changes and new policies to follow and their support for local community theatre.

An interview with Mamma Mia Cast
CHMCC’s production of Mamma Mia has been fully cast and is now entering the rehearsal stage. We thought we’d spend a few minutes with Jacinta Bentley and Karlie Hackfath, who have been cast in the lead roles of Donna and Sophie Sheridan.
Why did you both audition for Mamma Mia?
K. I am obsessed with ABBA. I’ve been to the museum in Sweden, seen the movies and have basically grown up listening to their music. I absolutely had to be a part of this show.
J. I saw the musical in Melbourne back in 2005, and have waited 16 years for it to available for amateur theatre. It has been on my bucket list since then, and when I saw CHMCC were doing it I couldn’t wait to audition.
What was your reaction when you found out you had won the lead roles?
K. I was taking my dog for a walk along a bush track, and when I got the phone call I actually started crying. I did a happy dance along the rest of the track.
J. I was still driving home, and when Dee called and started talking about the auditions I didn’t think I had got the part. When she finally said I did it was surreal, I was shocked and excited.
How do you think the Coffs Harbour audiences will respond to this show?
K. It is such a popular musical, and because there are the movies as well almost everyone knows the show. I’m sure audiences are going to love it.
J. I know it will have people singing along and dancing in the aisles. Everyone has grown up with and loves ABBA music.
The main story line of Mamma Mia revolves around a mother and daughter. What does it mean to you that it is such a strong female perspective?
K. It is so empowering for us in that regard. It is similar to Wicked and the storyline with the two female friends. I think so many mothers and daughters can connect to this story and relate back to their own experiences. My friend’s mother cries when she watches the lead up to the wedding scene, it is just so relatable.
J. This is a coming of age story for Sophie. It is about discovering who she is and what her future holds. For Donna it is more about letting go of her fears for Sophie and allowing her to grow and become her own person.

A Note from the Director of the Wizard of Oz
When I was asked to take on the Direction for the junior production of the wizard of oz, I jumped at the chance. The wizard of Oz was one the first Musicals I did as a child, where I played the iconic role of Dorothy. This musical holds an incredibly special place in my heart, and I am thrilled I get to share my passion and vision with the next generation of performers.
Auditions were held at the end of May and what a turn out we had. Nearly 60 enthusiastic children aged between 8-18 put their name down to audition, our panel had an extremely difficult job and I wish I could have cast everyone and really encourage all those who were not successful to try again in future shows.
Already we have faced some obstacles, we had just finished our first week of rehearsals when NSW had several Covid restrictions placed on the state which affects how we rehearse. We can have no more than 20 in our space, so this is proving difficult when we have nearly 40 in the cast. Learning songs and blocking scenes in masks is extremely difficult…but I AM DETERMINED TO GET THIS SHOW TO THE STAGE.
If you would like to help in anyway during this show please reach out, we are always looking for volunteers for backstage, front of house, costumes and make up.
Check out our Dorothy, Lily Mackay and Dorothy’s understudy, Maise McCormick working hard to learn their lines at home. (These kids are incredible, and can you believe that only 3 weeks in some are already off their scripts!?) what superstars.
That is all from me, I look forward to seeing you all in the audience taking a journey over the rainbow with us in September.

Please note that due to pandemic restrictions affecting the number of cast members allowed on stage, the company has had to postpone its production of 'Wizard of Oz' until May next year.
