October 2018

If it's October it must only be a few weeks away from our next production, Les Misérables! We're very excited to be presenting this iconic show, beloved by so many. And we intend to do it justice!
The cast has been working hard at rehearsals, learning all the music and staging (Les Mis is entirely sung-through with almost no spoken dialogue), plus all the extra time involved in costuming, photoshoots, and even wig and makeup tutorials. It's looking great!
The staging will be unlike nothing we've attempted before, with the orchestra located remotely and the stage extended... well, you'll just have to come along to find out! Tickets have been selling steadily ever since they went on sale, so don't leave it too late or you may find you won't be able to get any. Take a look at the pre-production photos in the web gallery for more photos! Thanks to Simon Whittaker for the great shots.
We also saw our Juniors present Alice in Wonderland Jr in September - a Wonder of a show indeed, and a great job by the junior cast and crew, all of whom were under the age of 18. Alice was a great success, and we look forward to hearing what the Juniors have planned in the future. You can seen photos in the Alice web gallery.
We are also excited to announce audition details for Shrek! Visit the audition page for details - auditions aren't until January, which gives us a bit of time for a rest after Les Mis. I for one will appreciate the break, and it'll give you young folks time to decide whether you're going to audition for CHATS' Heathers or Shrek! That'll be a dilemma for some, I'm sure.
We look forward to seeing you at Les Misérables for an epic experience!

From the President

I have to say that I am so proud of our Junior CHMCC Committee and the Junior production team for the incredible work displayed in the recent production of "Alice in Wonderland Jr".
If you saw this production you would understand exactly what I am talking about! Everything form the direction, staging, choreography, singing, costuming and backstage work was brilliant. This is an amazing effort, especially considering the entire production crew and cast (yes including the directors) were all under the age of 18. This is a first for Coffs Harbour and we hope that it is definitely not the last! Bravo to our young people involved in theatre and giving the opportunity for youth to shine.
Our November production of Les Miserables is shaping up to be one epic show. We are very excited to present this show to the people of Coffs Harbour and also display the amazing talent we have here in town. There are new faces along with stalwarts of the company, ready to amaze you with their gifts. I would like to thank our Director Paul McLeod for his tireless efforts to bring this show to life - particuarly during his period of illness!
Please do not leave it too late to purchase tickets for this one - they are already selling fast.
See you at the Jetty Theatre in November!!

From the Director

We are now only a few weeks out and all set to deliver!! The stage modifications have been approved by Council and are in construction off-site. The props are accumulating apace. Costumes have been fitted and altered. Stage blocking has been finessed. The orchestra is rehearsing. Photos have been taken. Les Miserables has crawled into our homes, our lives and our dreams. We are where we need to be.
I could not be prouder of the collaboration of our exceptional cast, who are handling complex vocals and choreography with commitment. They have worked diligently to ensure that we are off-script. The production crew, led by Di O'Ferrall, have been similarly productive; the promotional materials and costumes for this show are exquisite. And the endlessly-patient Musical Director Tim Egan is conducting his incredible tricks with fusion at sitzprobe.
Each of us participating in this show continue to be deeply moved by its themes - redemption, love, justice, crime and punishment, morality and human solidarity - and by experiencing the lives of Victor Hugo's characters in their journey through some of the most gripping and heartrending scenes in fiction.
The social problems of the 1830s continue through the frontiers of time until now. The wounds that litter our world have not gone away. People still live in ignorance and despair, people still sell their lives in return for bread, children still lack education and experience homelessness. Les Miserables is a beacon of hope and testament to the power of the human spirit in face of such injustices and adversities.
Come and be inspired by its noble and powerful stories. We are ready to tell them.
