February 2021
A note from the Vice President
Wow! We’re two months in to 2021 already. Where is the year going?
Welcome members to our next CHMCC Newsletter. As we hopefully move towards a “normal” year, rehearsals for Into The Woods continue apace. As most of you may be aware, our original Director Joshua Vucicevic has had to step away from the show and we were fortunate that a newcomer to town, Tim Gibbs, agreed to step in. Tim has directed Into the Woods in 2017 in Port Macquarie and we are incredibly thankful to him for agreeing to join our community and bring this great show to the stage. Welcome Tim.
Over the last few years, our company has continued to spread its wings and chase more technically challenging shows as well as revisiting old favourites. Live theatre has the ongoing challenge of competing with TV and Cinema as well as a multitude of streaming platforms. So many newly available shows are staged as a live cinematic experience and this has posed interesting challenges for directors. Testing the boundaries and reimagining highly technical shows (making Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins and a certain green witch from Oz fly comes to mind) for our theatre is a wonderfully creative and rewarding exercise. Bringing these shows to Coffs Coast audiences is exciting and terrifying all in one. CHMCC Committee are endeavouring to ensure we can continue to do this.
On a more sombre note, 2021 has begun with the passing of another of our theatre family. We have lost a brother this year. James Hall was a regular on the Jetty Memorial Theatre stage and had one of his most memorable roles in the CHMCC production of Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein. He played the dual role of Sergeant Kemp and the Hermit and once again showed us his absolute versatility as a performer.
As we continue to struggle through the aftermath of 2020 and the COVID pandemic that continues to overshadow many events, the reality of mortality and the fragility and precious nature of life hits home when we lose one of our own.
It also lets us reflect on our theatre family in general and what’s really important to us all. When faced with our own mortality, through the death of one of our own, we show who we truly are. We come together. We support each other. We, in essence, love and accept each other for who we are, mistakes and successes together.
Life is too short to continue to hold petty grudges. Love well, forgive freely. VALE James Hall. We will miss you, but know that you will never be far from us. The theatre will always be your home and we, your family.

President's Report
Hello everyone, it’s hard to believe we’re already two months into the year!
Rehearsals for ‘Into The Woods’ are well underway, with a full, scripts-down run through of Act 1 happening on Sunday 28 February. From all accounts the cast are having a great time, and director Tim is very happy with progress to date. Tickets are now on sale so make sure you grab yours as this is shaping to be another great show.
It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of the “Dame” of Coffs Harbour theatre, Shirley Barnett. Shirley was a stalwart of CHATS and taught and mentored many aspiring actors. Her passion and dedication to the arts will be sorely missed. Vale Shirley.
That’s it from me for now – short and sweet for this month. As always, we are your committee, so please get in contact with me or any of the rest of the committee if we can do anything for you – our contact details are at the end of this and every newsletter.
See you at the theatre!

Into the Woods
Firstly, thank you all for you very warm welcome into the CHMCC family.
For those who don't yet know me I am Tim Gibbs and I have recently moved up from Port Macquarie although I am originally a Londoner. I have a fairly extensive theatrical background and love a challenge so when I was asked to talk to the committee about taking on Into The Woods I was only too keen, especially as I had directed a very successful run of this same show in 2017 in Port Macquarie. I would like to acknowledge Josh Vucicevic' hard work for putting together this cast and I wish him all the very best for the future.
Taking on this first show of 2021, particularly after the past years hazards with Covid, is a daunting task but fortunately the cast is absolutely fantastic and have shown their hunger and dedication to get this show to stage and after only 3 weeks rehearsals we have completed blocking of the first act and are already part way through Act 2 and it is shaping up to be a roller coaster of a show full of twists, turns, emotion and comedy!
As with any show the strength and success comes not just from the stellar performances on stage but the drive and encouragement from the entire theatre community. This is where you come in. Spread The Word... This show is not to be missed! There is something for everyone. The music is sensational, the lighting and set design is utterly immersive and audience members will be on the edge of their seats wondering what will happen next! This is not James Corden and Johnny Depp... This is a proper musical and make my words.... you will love it!
